Local National Parks

MCastle15cI am fortunate to live in an area in which certain historical ruins are preserved as National Parks. There is a long history of communities in the Verde Valley. The mild winters, flowing creeks and rivers and riparian areas foster this.

This is Beaver Creek, looking out from Montezuma’s Castle. It looks ideal for farming due to the easy access to water.

Montezuma’s Castle has nothing to do with the historical Montezuma, but the name stuck. The south-facing limestone cliff where it is located is adjacent to Beaver Creek.

MCastle15eMCastle15bThe height the inhabitants had to climb to access their homes is impressive. There are other dwellings more on the ground level.

The park has a display representing a cut-away view of the dwellings so you can see how the people lived there.

Miles away is Montezuma’s Well. Water comes up from deep in the earth, and fills this cauldron.

Montezuma’s Well has an outflow starting here and forming a stream where Sycamore trees thrive. This is very useful for agriculture, as well.

Tuz15e Tuz15aTuzigoot means “the crooked water” and is an impressive hilltop community.

Look at the view to the south and to the north and the surrounding valley. Notice the visitor’s center in the large photo.
