Is it time to make your New Years Resolutions and set your goals for the coming year?

If you said NO!, this post is for you.

If you said YES, this post is especially for you.

The average person makes the same New Years resolution year after year after year.

Why?

They don’t stick. Most people give up on them after a short time. Why? Mostly because they are unrealistic. In fact, a New Years Resolution goes about things from the wrong direction; it is unnatural. The resolution is made year after year because we really believe we can change, that is true, it is natural is to want more out of life.

So if resolutions are going in the wrong direction, does that mean we just drift directionless? NO, we can choose to have more of what we really want in our lives. And we can choose it without willpower, forcing, efforting, and detailed plans of  how we will achieve certain goals (because they change, anyway, don’t they?)

Really? How?

The secret to a happier life is getting clear about your desires, what matters most to you, being specific about what is included in the life of your dreams.  Writing them down and reading them out loud daily keeps them in your awareness.

This is important for at least five reasons.

  1. Because the clearer you are about what you want, the easier you can see it in front of you.
What if you set out on a trip but didn’t get clear about your destination. What do you pack? What direction do you start out? How do you know when you have arrived? Instead, you start by getting clear about your destination. Paris or Barcelona? Hong Kong or Auckland? The same is true with the desires in your life. Getting clear and writing them down sets in motion that part of you that recognizes the pattern of your desires in the environment.
  2. Because you begin to take action.
Writing your clear desires down is simply the beginning. I have found that writing down my goals and reviewing them daily allows the next most important action to unfold. Easily, naturally, without forcing.
  3. Because it allows you to always go toward what you desire.
When an opportunity presents itself, check to see if it makes you happier. In fact, new opportunities can become distractions pulling you off course. If the opportunity resonates with your highest desires, then it is worth your time. If not, then there is no need to pursue it.
  4. Because focusing on your desires in the present makes them inevitable.
From the moment you write down your clear desires, you begin to feel them as a whole. By focusing on them, the life you want, it becomes more and more real in feeling, it is experienced in the present moment.
  5. Because it will enable you to see and appreciate and have gratitude for your dreams come true.
What you truly desire in your life you have to some degree, otherwise you would not recognize it as something you want more of. As I focus on my desires, I see them manifest in fuller and fuller ways. Sometimes a little bit here, a little bit there. Sometimes a “wow look at that” here and “it’s awesome” there. Gratitude is the natural expression of seeing this.

Why Happiness?

Most people experience happiness only in certain moments. When circumstances are just right. When he said the right thing, did the right thing. When something is accomplished. But that kind of happiness is fleeting. Most people think it is not possible to experience happiness for our whole life.

There is a different kind of happiness, one not dependent on circumstances. Because it is coming from the inside out, it makes everything easy. When one is fully aligned, everything flows from there and there is no “I” doing things and the result is better than “I” could have imagined. Everyone deserves this kind of happiness . . . would you agree?

babyLook in the face of a baby. The truth is that we were born like this, happy. Actually, Happiness is easy because it is our natural state.

You have probably experienced that the more energy, love, attention you give, the more you get. If your deepest desire is happiness, the more rooted you are in the desire, the more you are able to keep going, it is impossible to fail. Success happens by itself with a full-on long-term commitment to clear desires. All you need to do is show up.

Happiness Guarantees Success

You could say that Happiness guarantees success. Shawn Achor is the bestselling author of The Happiness Advantage and for years at Harvard studied exactly that. He says:

thehappinessadvantageIf we can get somebody to raise their levels of optimism or deepen their social connection or raise happiness, turns out every single business and educational outcome we know how to test for improves dramatically. You can increase your success rates for the rest of your life and your happiness levels will flatline, but if you raise your level of happiness and deepen optimism it turns out every single one of your success rates rises dramatically compared to what it would have been at negative, neutral, or stressed.

Isn’t happiness selfish because so much of the world is suffering? This study would refute that. The only way to stop the suffering is to bring more happiness into the world.

Don’t try to do it on your own . . .

“You cannot escape the life of your dreams when you share with people who love you.”
                                                                                              – Loto Vazquez

LotoVazquezYou have probably heard about sharing with like-minded people. Your mind can trick you, but it cannot trick like-minded people, they can see right through. So when you share with like-minded people, you get clear feedback. By like-minded people we might mean like-hearted people: someone who will not judge you. You can start with a pet if like-minded people are hard to come by. Be smart about what serves you the most, this is an opportunity again not to effort because you are supported by their similar vibration. In fact, in the life of your dreams you are surrounded by people you love, by like-minded people.

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Consider who those are for you. Can you gather 5 or more like-minded people?
