From More Creativity
This is a favorite of mine. It is part of a conversation with two young men, Connor and Jay from Scarbourough UK:
With the Silence and the Presence none of the other stuff matters. It’s nice scenery.
In an introductory talk he asked me, What’s your highest desire?
I said success.
He said why, what would it bring you?
No matter what we started with, whether it was money or family or relationships or career or cars, anything, it all ended up with peace and happiness.
It’s not the actual material object or thing or even the people that you really want, it’s what it brings you, which is contentment, happiness and peace. This is possible with no outside influence.
Even without the objects and people you are immediately putting your happiness somewhere else. “I’ll be happy when . . .” “I’ll be happy when . . .” You’re immediately taking your own happiness from yourself. I’ve got my happiness here and I’m going to put it right over there and chase it forever. Or you could just invite it back.
Even with emotions, instead of seeing emotions as a bad thing, pushing sadness away, pushing anger away, they just want to be held like children coming home. You can feel sad or angry or peaceful at the same time. It was a big one for me when I realized that.
This moment is not missing anything. A lot of people our age group take this notion of meditation and think they are too busy. Rather than say I’ll sit down for 20 minutes in the morning and I’ll have way more fun all day. Because life’s just brilliant.
