wreath  cornucopiaHow to reduce stress, prevent colds and the flu

Looking for a quick fix so that you can keep up a hectic overstressed life?

That is not what you will find here. What I will be talking about is a Natural Medicine approach, which involves staying balanced in lifestyle and listening to your body when it talks to you with symptoms.

More details are in the blog Stay Healthy Through the Holidays

Strategies for Balance

happywomanleaningThis may sound boring, but really, can’t you see that when you are happy you tend to do these things? Or when you do these things you are happy?  If you have never done one or more of these, then it is time for a medical consult to find out what needs balancing on a deeper level.

  • Sleep sound and awaken refreshed
  • Exercise and/or move the body regularly
  • Spend time outside in the sunshine
  • Enjoy social time with friends and family
  • Job or career is fulfilling and allows time for self and family/friends
  • Know your needs on the deepest level and follow your intuition
  • Make time for regular relaxation
  • Feel and express gratitude
  • Eat food that is delicious and nutrient-dense
  • Minimize processed foods and sugar
  • Drink water throughout the day
  • Avoid environmental toxins in air, food, drink, household, EMFs

Do everything you can to moderate your response to stress, whether it is rest, meditation, lifestyle changes, taking herbs or homeopathic remedies.

These products are the finest I found on the market. They are each available in my office.

Muco coccinum

MucoBasketMuco coccinum is a homeopathic medicine prepared with various strains of bacteria and viruses. It includes two strains of the worst flu epidemics of the 20th century. As a homeopathic preparation, this medicine gently activates the body’s natural defense mechanisms to protect itself from the flu.

For Prevention of Symptoms associated with Colds and the Flu

  • Take one tablet every 2 weeks, starting early autumn and proceeding through the winter.
  • The best time is when the weather changes, repeating at subsequent weather changes.

  • If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a health care practitioner.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding do not use unless directed by your health care practitioner.

  • Press the tablet out of the blister packet and put it on the tongue. It is OK to touch it. Let it melt slowly without chewing.
  • For little children: crush the tablet, dissolve it in a bit of pure water, and administer it with a spoon.

 Astragalus tincture

astragalustinctureCertain herbs function in the human body as immunomodulators, meaning that they help regulate the immune system so that it can respond appropriately. It may help to take such herbs seasonally.

Astragalus is one of those. For a tincture:

30 drops once a day to maintain a healthy immune system

May be put in water or other beverage

HLC immunity + pro

HLCdisplayThe majority of the immune system is in your gut, so it pays to reinforce and nurture your gut bacteria.

HLC immunity + pro comes as a box of individual packets filled with the perfect combination of probiotics and immune system nutrients.

How to take HLC immunity + pro:

  • In a glass, add water to one packet of powder and mix. It dissolves easily.

For maintenance:

  • Take the contents of one packet daily with a meal, a few hours before or after taking other medications.

Note: If you are immune compromised, consult your healthcare practitioner to approve use.

At the First Sign

The first signs that you are coming down with something, in case you need a reminder, include:

  • fatigue3More tired than usual
  • Body aches, not related to exercise
  • Feeling cold, chilled
  • Scratchy throat
  • Niggling feeling that you are not your usual self
  • Feeling that something is off
  • Mounting a fever

If you act immediately, you can usually ward off a cold or flu. If these symptoms have gone on more than 24 hours, a cold or flu has taken hold, and you need other more individualized measures to speed recovery.

Using Prevention Remedies for Treatment

Muco coccinum

Acute Stage of the Flu

  • Take one tablet every two to three hours until symptoms subside.
  • This assists in drastically reducing the severity of flu symptoms.
  • Then continue one tablet in the morning and evening for 2 to 3 days more.

  • mucococcPress the tablet out of the blister packet and put it on the tongue. It is OK to touch it. Let it melt slowly without chewing.
  • For little children: crush the tablet, dissolve it in a bit of pure water, and administer it with a spoon.

Astragalus Tincture

When a cold or flu has begun, astragalus root can be dosed higher. That could be 30 drops of tincture three times per day as used for an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of colds and flu.

Home Remedies

woolsocksThe warming sock home remedy is simple and effective for reducing congestion in the head, throat, ears, and lungs.

Complete instructions and an explanation of how it works is at Warming Sock Home Remedy.

In addition, rest is paramount. You may also want to stay warm by:

  • Bundling up, whether it is with layers of clothing or thick blankets in bed.
  • Or taking a warm bath or soak your feet in warm water, possibly with warming herbs.
  • Sipping on warm drinks like warming herbal tea or soup broth.
  • Avoiding cold in the form of cold foods like salads, raw veggies, dairy, oranges and orange juice.

thermometerIf you are mounting a fever, go with it! Do not take an aspirin or tylenol to bring it down. When you make a fever efficient, the immune system is activated multiple times over. So, bundle up or take a hot bath to reinforce the heat generated by the fever. Stay hydrated with plenty of clear fluids, but don’t eat if you are not hungry – and you won’t have much of an appetite with a fever. You can also use warming spices to heat up.

Kitchen herbs such as ginger, garlic and cayenne can be used successfully at the first sign of a cold. For more detailed uses, see the report available with the purchase of the Done-For-You Package or by itself below.

gingerGinger does so many things, but at the onset of a cold it can act as an antimicrobial and diaphoretic, which means it can raise your body temperature and help you sweat so to optimize the immune system. You can make a tea, but also can add it to bath water for a soak.

garlicFor the purpose of warding off a cold or flu, garlic must be raw, not dried or cooked. The objective is to saturate your body and those of your family and friends, so nothing is spread around.

cayenneJust a little bit of cayenne goes a long way. You can add it to your soup as well as make a tea. It will drastically increase circulation and like ginger will help you sweat. It is also antimicrobial and really helps with the onset of a sore throat and gets mucus running.

Herbal, Nutritional and Homeopathic Remedies

Elderberry syrup is well-known for shortening the duration of a cold when taken at the onset. This needs to be taken frequently, about every 30 to 60 minutes.

Avoid goldenseal herb at the first sign of a cold, because it is cooling and tends to tighten the mucous membranes and decrease mucus. Echinacea is similarly cooling, but if it is combined with warming herbs, it may be used in a cold.

Zinc supplementation is an effective cold remedy if it is dosed frequently. Experts recommend that zinc should not be taken for more than five days, though. A copper deficiency may result with long term usage by itself.

The brilliance of Homeopathy is that the symptoms you are having match the symptoms of a particular remedy. Besides Muco coccinum, there are single remedies which can be used. All it takes is a small amount of homeopathic education along with the right remedies in your kit.

Healthy Holidays — 2 Comments

  1. I am looking for a healthier way of managing my diagnosed condition of Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. I currently take Modafinil 200 mgs x daily for relief from excessive daytime sleepiness and also 20 mgs of fluoxitine 2 ex’s daily to help keep my cataplexy at bay.
The side effects of both meds are uncomfortable and I would like to know if there is something else I could try, natural and less harmful to.my body.

    • Hi JuDee
I congratulate you on looking for a “healthier way” of managing your conditions. However, your question points out a misunderstanding of Natural Medicine – where a medication can be replaced and a condition can be treated with a particular herb or homeopathic remedy. I doesn’t work that way. Treatments from Naturopathic Medical Doctors target who you are in terms of all of your bodily systems as well as mentally, emotionally and spiritually, when this condition started and what was happening at that time, and many other factors. If you truly wish to get healthier with Natural Medicine, I recommend finding a qualified Naturopathic doctor and being prepared to work with the doctor for months intensively and then the rest of your life. You may find doctors listed at naturopathic.org or your state licensing board, such as Arizona’s at ndaz.gov. And stay away from Dr. Google, please.
      In health,
      Dr. Cheryl
