Sniffles, tickle in the throat, cough, runny nose, fever . . .
What do you think when you feel these symptoms?
- “Oh, I caught it at my workplace, my co-worker was sick.”
- “My kids brought it home, now I am going to get sick.”
- “It’s cold and flu season, so I’d better watch out or I will catch it too!”
Are you a victim to viruses circulating? Are bacteria out to get you? Sure to get sick every time this year?
No, your body has not failed you
Thinking that viruses, bacteria, and people around you are the cause puts you in victim mentality, and Nature has no victims.
What if your body was initiating responses to move you to greater health?
Natural medicine believes that there is an innate intelligence within that is working to keep a balance.
When the accumulated burden of toxicity is too much, it finds a way to release it. When emotional stress is unresolved, it finds a way to balance. When physical stresses are too much, it asks for time to clear out and rebalance.
And this looks like the discharges of a runny nose, coughing up phlegm, and feeling unwell to encourage you to stop, clear out, and move to balance.
Mounting a fever is the ultimate turbocharging of the body to clean out toxins, clear infections, and reset the immune system.
I’m not saying the viruses do not exist and circulate, but perhaps they are serving you instead of you being a victim to them.
Look at it from the point of view of you being the host and susceptible to “getting sick” when the body needs rebalancing.
In Natural Health, these are all processes to create greater health, whether it is comfortable or not.
The danger of stopping the process
Getting sick in this way is not dangerous.
Taking something to lower the fever, dry up the mucus, or stop the cough, we interrupt the wise process of the body to eliminate what is not useful.
When it cannot discharge the toxins through body secretions, the body is forced to store them. Over time, this dysregulates cellular processes, making them less efficient and even damaging cellular machinery.
The danger is in stopping these natural processes.
It can result in chronic illness.
What it looks like to follow Nature’s lead
Instead, the first thing to do when “getting sick” is to stop and support Nature’s intelligence in what it is creating.
Sometimes when you are feeling “off” and simply go to bed early and get quality sleep, that may be all that is needed to restore health. All that was needed was awareness and rest.
Sometimes when you have recognized that you are imbalanced in a certain way within the first 24 hours, you can take a homeopathic remedy “For the First Signs” and rest and may be able to re-balance without it developing further, cutting down time.
However when you have a full-blown sore throat, runny nose, cough, and perhaps fever, then Nature is asking you to follow its lead.
Depending on your symptoms, you can
- #1: REST: stop what you are doing and let your body do its thing
- Reduce inflammation by not eating when you are not hungry so symptoms resolve faster and more cleanly
- Bundle up, drink hot beverages, perhaps take a hot bath, especially if you have a low fever so you can help make the immune system more efficient
- Support cellular drainage of toxins with homeopathic remedies and or herbs
- Stay hydrated, adding minerals both trace and those indicated like zinc
- Engage in other indicated Naturopathic processes that support the body
- Reflect on where your life has become imbalanced, and make changes
Whatever you do, DO NOT stop the process!
Chronic disease prevention
When you get sick and the symptoms are allowed to move through fully, supporting the body along the way, you allow Nature’s intelligence to work.
The cells can clear out to work more efficiently, latent infections may clear out, toxins are released, and the whole body functions more efficiently.
You most likely will feel better than when you got sick as the body gets stronger and more resilient.
This is Nature’s intelligence at work.
