Back at the office, I pose at my desk with the framed certificate.
I also received an award with a clock in it.
The best part of the event for me was to see how everyone was intently listening to me while I spoke. I promised to surprise in what I said, and they were hanging on each word.
When I got back to my luncheon table, a member there gave me thumbs up!
My Influences
I was asked to talk about my influences when I accepted the Trailblazer Award. For those who could not be there, I printed below the draft of my 2 minute speech.
I appreciate being recognized by this Trailblazer award.
I thank my patients, friends, and family for supporting me in me following my passion, whatever it has been, allowing for me to be of service.
I love being here with all of you, seeing talent in each one of you and enthusiasm in your faces, celebrating together.
Paolo Soleri and Arcosanti, Gail Derin, Drew Collins, Dr. Gueniot, Lisa Long . . . yes, these are the names of some of my influences. I thank them all.
And I would like to talk about the unnamed bigger influence that puts everything in perspective. Paolo, Gail, Gerard, Lisa are the content of my life that has shaped how I am right now. But there is a context in which they all exist that allowed them to come into my life and guide me in following my passion.
Consider this room. The people, tables, chairs, plates of food are some of the content of this room. But it is the space here that allows for these objects and people to exist. Space contains it, space between things.
There are sounds in this room: the clanking forks on plates, me talking . . . but you would not be able to hear any of it if silence did not exist. Silence contains the sounds, is between the sounds making them understandable.
There is movement in this room. Your jaw chewing, the servers walking around, me waving my hands . . . but you only notice movement because of its contrast to stillness. There is stillness before movement begins, and stillness between movement.
The stuff of the room, the sounds in the room and the movement in the room are the content of this room. What allows them to be is the space, silence and stillness that precedes and contains them, their context.
For me, knowing the Infinite Space, Silence and Stillness is the biggest influence to being who I am, doing what I do. It allows for me to follow my passion without compromise and makes life easy.
My wish for you is to know this context of stillness and silence too.
Thank You
