They claim to help us, but in reality, do us harm.

Darin Olien defines “fatal conveniences” as toxic products we routinely use and the unhealthy things we do that our culture makes us believe are safe and necessary for living today.

This is not to scare you, but to open your eyes so you have a choice.

It is to expose which are damaging us and show those that are not harmful to ourselves and the world.

Failed System

Most people are not too willing to give up those cleaning and body care products, clothing, processed foods and other products that have made their lives so efficient. Yet, the fact that they are so toxic, even fatal, is evidence that our system is failing us.

Reading Olien’s book Fatal Conveniences walks us through what makes the products that surround us so bad for our health and the health of the planet. Then he offers alternatives.

Open Your Eyes

Start by surveying the products that you use every day:

Personal Care: soap, bodywash, shampoo, fragrance, moisturizers, creams, cosmetics, shaving cream, tampons, sunscreen, deodorant, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash . . .

Houshold items: laundry detergent, dryer sheets, cleaning products, air fresheners, furniture, carpet, bedding, cookware, plastic containers & bottles, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, air conditioning . . .

Food and beverages: fruits & veggies with high pesticide residue (EWG), grains sprayed with glyphosate as a dessicant (wheat), bST in dairy, factory produced meat & eggs, farmed fish, processed foods: cured meats, high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, preservatives like BHT & BHA, food dyes; plastic packaging with PFA & PFO, bottled water, soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, coffee drinks . . .

Electronic devices: microwave oven, modem & wi-fi, computer, tablets, cell phones, bluetooth headphones . . .

Clothing: chemical-treated fabrics: “permanent press” “wrinkle free” “flame retardant” “waterproof” “stain resistant” “odor fighting” “antimicrobial”; synthetic fabrics: polyester, nylon, spandex, lycra, fleece, microfiber; cotton T-shirts (pesticides, water intensive, processing, dyes), bras, disposable diapers, dry cleaning, leather . . .
