The microscope opened us up to a world too tiny for our eyes to see on their own. The telescope opened us up to a world so far beyond that we could hardly imagine the vastness of it.

Now, in our times, we are capable of looking deeply within. Vibration underlies everything, we are told. Let’s look inward to perceive vibration in ways that were previously hidden.

Two of our senses which detect vibration are our ears which hear sound and our eyes which see light. Now there is an instrument that crosses these two senses: it can give us a visual image of what we are hearing.

The CymaScope instrument displays in real time an image of the sound we are hearing. It is not a computer generated image based on the sound, it is the actual vibration of sound made visible. The CymaScope converts vibrations from sound into ripples of water, displaying the beautiful geometric patterns that sound is.

How cool is that!

Does it have a practical application?

Yes, there is a therapy called Cymatherapy, which is the application of the audible frequencies of sound to the human body for healing.

It is based on the idea that cells that are constantly transmitting their own frequencies through bio-electric currents as they communicate and interact with each other and all of life. You could say that cells are singing. They sing just because they can, as well as to communicate and harmonize with life. Healthy sounds have a beautiful harmonic sound and diseased cells sound and look discordant.

When sound is applied to cells, that sound naturally is accompanied by infrared light. The cell, especially the proteins in the cell membrane, respond to both the sound and the light, since it is speaking their language. Each cell has a preferred resonant frequency. Provided that the sound is not too loud, the cell will absorb the frequencies they need and let be those not needed.

By finding and combining the precise frequencies of healthy cells and tissue, Cymatherapy instruments deliver these complex sound waves to the cells and tissues of the body. This stimulated regeneration and healing.

What if I don’t have access to this instrument?

Healing frequencies come to you along with stunningly beautiful images of the shapes of the sound in the Soundflower Experience. A specific set of frequencies are used for the healing and you can see at the same time a visual image of those frequencies made by a CymaScope.

Watching and hearing sound simultaneously is a new phenomenon which has been shown to create deep states of relaxation and a sense of well-being. You can enjoy the videos at home at your convenience. Preview videos of Soundflowers here.

The Soundflower Experiences help relieve stress and even prepare for contemplative experiences. The experiencer is surrounded by healing from a specific set of harmonics and subharmonics from the 5 pointed images.

You can buy these videos to enjoy over and over again.

How can I play with this?

The actual CymaScope instruments are precisely made, and are used in many areas of research, including medical research. They are expensive, but there is a mobile app which demonstrates the patterns of the CymaScope and is fun to play with.

The CymaScope app is for seeing sound, making music visible. It is available on Apple and  Android platforms.

You can play the piano keyboard on the app or speak into the microphone to see the geometric pattern of the sounds you make. This video demonstrates how the app works.

Now that we’ve had some fun, let’s delve deeper.

Ancient Origins?

Ancient sacred texts tell us that “in the beginning was the word.” This kind of reference appears in many variations throughout the world. If we are to believe the texts, we see that a “word” is  a sound, therefore sound was the initiating spark of the world.

How did that happen?

By looking at some sounds and their similarity to primordial forms found in Nature, we can speculate. Could life be an aspect of sound?

Watch John Stuart Reid show us in this fascinating video.
