What would you say if I declared that 2020 was the best year yet?

I hear a lot of cynicism. Pffff . . . how could that be? Lost lives, lost livelihoods, lost control, lost elections, lost connections, lost . . .

Yes, it was a year of losses. But . . .

What if it also was the best year yet?

Can you find one reason why 2020 might be the best year yet?

Make a choice

All it takes is the choice to look for something good and useful in what happened in 2020. All it takes is orienting the mind towards the positive while acknowledging it could be looked at either way, if you are judging.

Did you find something?

Something to choose to appreciate?

I appreciate . . .

One widespread discovery is that we can have a wider reach through virtual connections, making things possible which were not even considered before. In my world, having virtual Toastmaster meetings which morphed into virtual speaker meetings has allowed people who moved away to still participate. It has allowed new members to join which are a vital addition to our group. It has allowed us to continue to practice speaking while remote from each other. We practice on the virtual platform which is becoming so prevalent that we need to develop our skills here. Quite a few blessings!

What else did you find to appreciate in 2020?

This exercise, which can bring up lots of emotions, shows that no matter what, when we choose to, we can find something to appreciate in anything.

In 2020, the quality of the air when we stopped traveling so much. The creativity we had to use to forge closer connections in different ways. The discovery of our resilience.

Now

Now, in this present moment, take time to find appreciation in life. When looking back, we can discover many blessings. When looking at right now, we can find big and little things to appreciate.

Perhaps start with the little things. My shoes keep me warm and dry, my mug of tea warms and satisfies me. Things we take for granted. I have a warm house, a car that gets me places, friends to catch up with.

Big things. Whatever it is for you – the love of my life, daily walking the dog with no pain, owning my home, my own business. Things may not seem big until we appreciate them. Putting attention on what we have in our lives brings appreciation. That can cause them to expand and become BIG blessings in life.

The bottom line is that we can appreciate 2020 by choosing to find the life-affirming things there. It all starts with a choice from the mind. We don’t have to be in love with 2020, or even feel warm fuzzies about it, and we can still find something useful and beneficial there.

Start by choosing

Appreciation is a shift of the mind. It comes from a choice to be life-affirming. Anyone can do it when they make the choice. It is that simple and easy.

Join me in exploring appreciation, the first and the easiest life-affirming upward-spiraling choice.
