When you are adopting a fasting lifestyle, your symptoms can tell you a lot.

Hunger or no hunger, light-headed or clear-headed, weak or full of energy . . . they all mean something.

But until you are clear what your symptoms mean, you just might want an objective measurement to correlate with your symptoms.

Test What?

When your are facilitating switching from the sugar-burning metabolism to the fat-burning metabolism in a fasting lifestyle, certain numbers will tell you how much of which metabolism is at play at any particular time.

The sugar-burning metabolism is burning sugar, so measuring your blood sugar is a tell where you are at in that metabolism. Of course, the body wants to keep within a certain range and will create blood sugar from stores to keep you in homeostasis. Testing blood sugar can tell you where in that range you are.

But it is not enough just to know your blood sugar.

The fat-burning metabolism creates ketones when it is active, and the number of ketones varies, depending on how active the fat burning metabolism is. You can find out by measuring blood ketones.

Yes, you can measure urinary ketones by peeing on a strip, and some people may want to start there. However, when fine tuning a fasting lifestyle, at some point is becomes very useful to measure blood ketones, especially on longer fasts.

Enter Keto-Mojo

Dr. Cheryl Kasdorf recommends the Keto-Mojo meter to be able to confidently correlate your symptoms with blood sugar and ketone readings, letting you know exactly where your metabolism is active.

Be aware this is a very useful scientific tool – the Keto-Mojo meter – for people at a certain point in their fasting journey. I am not discussing how to use it here, as that requires nuanced guidance.

However, to see how you can handle using a tool like this, check out the Testing Demonstration video on the Keto-Mojo website.
